STRONG COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT EARNS GUNLOCKE TOP AWARD
Rochester Business Journal Honors Furniture Manufacturer for Demonstrating Significant Commitment to Conservation
Wayland, NY - May 2009 - Gunlocke, an industry leader in high-end casegoods, conferencing, seating and lounge furniture, has been recognized with the Rochester Business Journal (Rochester, N.Y.) Environmental Leadership Award. As an honoree, Gunlocke was recognized at a luncheon on April 16.
"Reducing our environmental footprint is a key objective in Gunlocke's design, development and manufacturing processes," said Don Mead, president of Gunlocke. "Being recognized as an environmental leader is truly an honor. At Gunlocke, we strive to provide our customers with superior products that are manufactured with recycled and rapidly renewable materials, which decrease our overall impact on finite and precious resources."
The 2009 recipients of the Environmental Leadership Awards were recognized in four categories: alternative energy, environmental innovation, recycling and reuse and resource reduction. Gunlocke was honored in the category of Resource Reduction.
In order to be selected for this specific honor, Gunlocke demonstrated the development of manufacturing processes and business practices that resulted in a significant reduction, or improved efficiency, in the amount of raw materials and/or natural resources used. In general, nominated companies needed to demonstrate a significant commitment to environmental or conservation issues and be currently dedicating resources to a project, process or program that ultimately will have a positive impact on the environment.
Gunlocke's furniture offerings can help businesses achieve LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points due to incorporating recycled content, regional materials, certified wood and rapidly renewable materials into its products. By incorporating recycled content and rapidly renewable materials, Gunlocke is helping to reduce the depletion of long life cycle materials. Gunlocke has also been a proponent of lean manufacturing processes for many years, which has led to an overall greening of the company. In addition, Gunlocke utilizes certified wood in its products, which encourages environmentally responsible forestry.
