2. Are your products Greenguard® IAQ Certified?
Greenguard® is an excellent program; however, we have decided to obtain certification under the SCS Indoor Air Advantage™ and SCS Indoor Air Advantage Gold™ programs. These programs are based off of the BIFMA Furniture Emissions Standards which we believe is superior to Greenguard®. The BIFMA Furniture Emissions Standard is an alternate compliance path to the LEED-CI IEQ 4.5 credit requirements.
3. Can Gunlocke’s private office furniture contribute to LEED-CI IEQ 4.5?
Yes. The LEED commercial interiors rating system under credit IEQ 4.5 defines systems furniture “as either a panel-based workstation comprised of modular interconnecting panels, hang-on components and drawer / filing components or a freestanding group of furniture items and their components that have been designed to work in concert.” Our private office furniture is a freestanding group of furniture items that have been designed to work in concert and therefore can contribute under this credit. Any of our casegoods and seating products that have obtained certification under the SCS Indoor Air Advantage™ or SCS Indoor Air Advantage Gold™ programs would contribute to LEED-CI IEQ 4.5. Occasional furniture items are excluded from the credit requirements.
4. What is level® ?
level is the multi-attribute, sustainability standard and third-party certification program for the furniture industry. It has been created to deliver the most open and transparent means of evaluating and communicating the environmental and social impacts of furniture products in the built environment. Taking into account a company’s social actions, energy usage, material selection and human and ecosystem health impacts, level addresses how a product is sustainable from multiple perspectives.
With level, customers can make informed choices about commercial furniture that exceed single attribute eco-certifications. The level brand identifies that a product has been vetted by an accredited third party certifier (NSF, SCS, or others) and its numeric marking 1, 2, or 3 indicates what threshold of certification it has achieved.
Manufacturers – big and small – now have a methodology to present the environmental characteristics in a clear, easily understood manner with a vernacular that gives end users the ability to make an “apples to apples” comparison.
The standard has been developed working with stakeholders and experts from inside and outside the industry over a three-year period. The process has been conducted in alignment with ANSI regulations and, the BIFMA e3-2012 is an ANSI approved standard.
5. How does the level® program correlate to the SCS Indoor Air Advantage™ Program?
If a product has achieved points under the BIFMA Sustainability Standard Credit 7.6: low emitting furniture, there may be a correlation. However, obtaining a certification under the level program does not automatically indicate a product is compliant with the emission requirements of the Indoor Advantage program. SCS Global Services is the third party certification body who provided independent certification of products under both programs.
6. Can Gunlocke provide FSC certified products and how would these products contribute to LEED-CI MR Credit 7?
Gunlocke’s FSC Chain of Custody number is SCS-COC-002143 and is valid until 1-26-2014. We currently offer FSC certified Casegoods, Seating and Conferencing. Our control system is the credit system, which means that we sell FSC labeled casegoods and conference tables based on the amount of FSC certified materials (inputs) that we use. Under the credit control system, 100% of every dollar spent on the new wood portion of FSC labeled casegood or conference table counts towards MR 7.0.
7. Can Gunlocke provide FSC “pure” veneers or FSC “pure” core materials or both?
We use FSC mix source materials to provide FSC certified products. We do not have a source of FSC pure composite core materials. We can provide FSC mix core and FSC pure veneers for a project as special, however it would be better for any customer working on a LEED project to consider buying our certified products labeled with an FSC mix Sources label.
Why is this better for customers? Under the FSC mix credit system, 100% of the dollars spent on the new wood portion of our FSC labeled products contributes to credit MR 7.0 under the LEED-CI rating system. For example, if we were to use an FSC pure veneer on a product, there would be an increase in price beyond the standard FSC upcharge and there would be no additional contribution to LEED-CI MR 7.0.
8. Are your products compliant with the California Air Resource Board (CARB) Airborne Toxic Control Measure (ATCM) 93120 Phase 2 formaldehyde emissions from composite wood components?
Effective January 1, 2009, hardwood plywood, particle board, medium density fiberboard, thin medium density fiberboard, and finished goods containing these materials must meet emissions limits given in title 17, California Code of Regulations section 93120.2. (refer to note below*)
CARB’s rule includes a “sell-through provision”, which allows for a timely clearing of existing inventories following the effective dates for Phase I and Phase II standards. For manufacturers of hardwood plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard, and thin density fiberboard 3 months sell-through period is provided. For distributors, a 5 month, and for importers a 3 month sell-through period is provided for hardwood plywood, particleboard, and medium density fiberboard, and thin medium density fiberboard manufactured before the Phase I and Phase II effective dates. An 18 month sell-through period is provided for distributors and importers of finished goods containing hardwood plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard, and thin medium density fiberboard. All the products that we produce and sell are compliant with this regulation.
9. Do you have a buy back or take back program?
Our products are designed to be resilient as well as repairable. We currently do not have an internal refurbishing program. However, there are third party programs whose administrators negotiate directly with the client to inventory, remove, refresh (if needed) and find new homes for old, but usable products. Items that cannot be reused go to recycling facilities.
